Fay Louise Gallagher and mother Fay Gallagher made records at this year’s National Wales Care Awards, as the pair became the first mother-daughter duo in the eight year history of the awards to have won prizes at the finals.

Fay Louise, Support Worker at CMG’s Bluetts House, won a Gold medal for ‘Dignity in Care’ and a Silver medal for ‘Leading Practice in Learning Disability Service’ at last Friday’s ceremony in Cardiff. Two years ago, her mother, who is also Home Manager at Bluetts House, won the same category for ‘Leading Practice in Learning Disability Service’, where she was awarded a Bronze.

Both prize-winners work for CMG, a leading independent provider for over 600 people with learning disabilities and associated complex needs across England and Wales. Bluetts House, based in Pontypool, is a specialist adult residential service for five individuals with mental health needs, where the mother-daughter pair have been working for a combined total of 14 years.

Fay junior’s Gold award in ‘Dignity in Care’ was a particular highlight, as the four medallists in this category were selected by the judges from all 49 nominees, as overall winners on the night. Sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government, the ‘Dignity in Care’ Award links to The Welsh Dignity in Care Programme, led by Gwenda Thomas AM, Deputy Minister for Social Services, which focuses on ensuring that older people are treated with dignity and respect. Ms Thomas presented all the candidates with their prizes at City Hall on Friday.

Talking about her achievement, Fay Louise said:

“I was so shocked when I found out about winning my Silver and Gold medals– I really wasn’t expecting it, and it’s only just sinking in now! I love my job at Bluetts House and have learnt so much since I started here.

“I was inspired by my mum Fay to go into caring, and I’m really keen to continue developing my skills and take on more responsibility in the future, so that I can offer the best possible service for our residents.”

Fay Gallagher, Home Manager at Bluetts House, said:

“Fay Louise winning the ‘Dignity in Care’ award on Friday really sums-up why she’s such a fantastic carer. She cares for all our service users with the utmost dignity and respect, and treats everyone exactly the same.

“She is passionate about enabling all the people we support at Bluetts House to be as independent as possible to achieve their goals. It’s a pleasure to work with Fay Louise, and I’m so proud of her – not just as my daughter, but also as a brilliant Support Worker.”
