Focus on Fitness: South Wales residents and staff have fun at healthy lifestyle sessions

Residents and staff from across 12 different CMG services in the Newport area have been participating in a new Fit Club programme, to learn more about healthy lifestyles and improving their wellbeing.

Fit Club was launched this month as a fun and interactive way for service users to stay fit and healthy. The sessions also provide a great social opportunity for residents, where they can meet different people and make new friends from the local area.

The meetings will run on a weekly basis over the next six weeks – with each session focusing on a different element of how to achieve a healthy lifestyle. During Fit Club’s launch event last week, service users and staff worked on their fitness by going on a short walk together, and then learnt about healthy eating and snacking, whilst being taught how to make fruit smoothies.

Future sessions will focus on how to maintain a healthy heart and quit smoking, medication-taking, relaxation and aromatherapy.

Service users who attended the launch session had a really good time, and are excited about coming along to more meetings over the next few weeks.

Vicky Lewis, a resident at Troed-y-Bryn supported living service in Caerphilly said:

“I really love Fit Club and it was great to learn how to make fruit smoothies last week. I have been meaning to lose weight for ages, but Fit Club inspired me to go to the gym more and I’ve lost four and a half pounds already!”

Claire Gunning, CMG’s Regional Director for Wales and organiser of Fit Club said:

“At CMG we are passionate about supporting our service users to stay fit and eat healthily. Fit Club is a fantastic scheme for our staff and residents, where everyone can get involved to learn about being healthy, at the same time as being creative and having lots of fun together. I am looking forward to next week’s session already!”
