A Wimbledon Care Company is using theatre to make sure people with disabilities can stand up and be counted on polling day. By Craig Burnett » Wimbledon Guardian

Care Management Group, which supports people with learning disabilities, has been using drama therapists to help its clients across Britain understand the election and decide where to put their cross.

Peter Kinsey, the Hartfield Road Company’s managing director, said: “Our election initiatives - and the drama workshops in particular - have been a tremendous success.
"The process of voting can be daunting for anyone and these sessions have been designed to help to take away any of that apprehension.

“All of the individuals we support have been extremely enthusiastic and many are excited about the prospect of making their vote count on May 6.

"All too often the voices of people with learning disabilities and mental health illnesses are not heard in our society.”

CMG Service Users grill their local candidates

Residents at 289 Dyke Road, Hove - a supported living service run by Care Management Group (CMG) - have been putting parliamentary candidates on the spot this week after representatives of each of the main parties were invited to visit the service to outline their policies ahead of the General Election.

CMG, who support individuals with learning disabilities and complex needs, were keen to make sure that everyone at Dyke Road was not only made aware of how they could register and place their vote, but also given the opportunity to make an informed choice about who they decide to back on May 6th.

Over the last week service users have fired questions to the Labour Candidate, Celia Barlow, the Liberal Democrat Candidate, Paul Elgood and the Conservative Candidate, Mike Weatherley on a wide range of issues. CMG also hope that the Green Candidate, Ian Davey, will visit before the Election.

Speaking today, Managing Director of Care Management Group, Peter Kinsey said:

“Too often the voices of people with learning disabilities and complex needs are not listened to in our society.

“It is at the heart of everything that we do at CMG to support our services users to reach their full potential and participate.

“We have been helping everyone we support to engage in this Election, should they wish to do so.

“The candidates’ visits have been a great success and everyone at Dyke Road is looking forward to going to the ballot box next week.”
