Competitors from across England and Wales gathered at Sutton Arena on Tuesday to participate in CMG’s prestigious National Athletics Championship at Sutton Arena. Service users, staff, family members and friends were excited to welcome guests of honour Daniel West (Team 2012 athlete), Tom Brake MP (constituency MP for Carshalton and Wallington), and Councillor Sean Brennan (Leader of Sutton Council), who were hugely impressed by the determination and dedication displayed by all the athletes.

CMG’s Athletics Championship, now an annual event, helps to promote sport as part of a healthy lifestyle for everyone who they support.

The day was an enormous success, and service users were particularly inspired to meet Daniel West and hear about his sporting triumphs at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand and at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens.

Tom Brake MP and Sutton Council Leader Sean Brennan also enjoyed meeting some of CMG’s local Sutton, Carshalton and Surrey service users and watching them compete in an array of events – including tug o’ war, sumo wrestling, high jump, long jump, javelin, and track events.

Speaking at the stadium, Tom Brake, Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington, said:

“I am delighted that CMG chose to host their annual Athletics Championship at Sutton Arena, and that so many people from far and wide came along to watch and take part. It was fantastic to meet so many local service users and hear about the great activities that they are involved with at CMG.”

Daniel West, Team 2012 athlete and Paralympic silver medallist in the discus said:

“I was honoured to present medals to all of CMG’s budding athletes today. I was really struck by how much talent and enthusiasm everyone displayed throughout the day and there was a great atmosphere at the arena. This represents the true spirit of sport, which we will be proud to put on show when the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games come to town next summer.”
