“I am a young man aged 22 years. I moved into Bushey Hall Road in January 2007 after a long and well planned transitional period. During this time I was able to visit Bushey Hall Road, meet the staff and spend time with other service users too.

I especially enjoy Bushey Hall Road because I have my own room with a large shower en-suite which was my preferred choice as I do not like baths. I live very close to my extended family and I get to see them very often and spend time away at our family home.

Prior to moving into Bushey Hall Road I was an informal in-patient in hospital. I was moved to the hospital after a breakdown at my previous placement. There was a lot of screaming and I couldn’t think or take it. There were a lot of things I couldn’t do for myself e.g. write my name, do my own personal care, make my own bed or hoover. But in the last two years I have developed all these skills.

Some of the other things I have been able to do with support from staff is to get a place at Stop Gap. This is a Hertfordshire-based programme offering training to young people with Asperger’s Syndrome and /or emotional and behavioural difficulties. I started at Stop Gap on 8th May 2007 and attended 2 days in a week and staff accompanied me both days. This was a year’s programme which prepared me for my next level. After this a lady from connexions and the Stop Gap staff worked with me and we identified the Learning for living and work (supported learning) programme would be ideal for me.

In September 2008 I joined Oaklands College in St Albans where I attend 2 days a week with support staff from Bushey Hall Road. On the same note in March 2007 I was offered a 1 day placement at Balmoral Day Services and I work every Thursdays at Langlebury Farm. I enjoy working there with small animals and I provide my mum with eggs every week.

I enjoy music and drama a lot and after working with Balmoral day Services they offered me a 1 day placement at the Performing Arts Centre - Newton Price in Watford which I attend every Friday.

This year I took part in the C.M.G. X-factor which was my idea and I came in 3rd place and felt very proud about it.

4 out of 5 days in a week I am very busy. Every Monday is my day off and I like going to the local gym. Every Wednesday evening I go out with my peers to the cinemas and every Sunday to the pub. Most Saturdays I play golf with my granddad or help my dad with the family business. Some of the other activities I have been able to do include: sailing in Norwich, trips to London e.g. London Eye, trips to the museum. This year we had a holiday abroad to Spain and I have also been to Italy as I am half Italian. In October 2008 we had a weekend away at Clacton-on-Sea. I have been to the circus, theatre and always attend the fireworks display. I enjoy being busy as this helps me be in control.

Final thought - I love living near mum and dad, and I support Watford football Club which is our local team”
